An acclaimed violist and music instructor, David Schwartz enjoyed an esteemed career spanning orchestral music, chamber music, and studio recording.

MARVIN HAMLISCH
(1944 – 2012)


Academy Award-winning composer, Pasadena Symphony and POPS conductor and established Local 47 member Marvin Hamlisch died Monday August 6. He was 68 years old.

Hamlisch took home Oscars for both The Sting and The Way We Were in 1974. A year later, he took Broadway by storm and scored a Tony Award for his ground-breaking musical A Chorus Line. During his illustrious career, Hamlisch won three Academy Awards, four Emmys, a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony, one of only 11 people in the world to receive all four of the prestigious entertainment industry awards.

The Pasadena Symphony Association released the following statement upon news of Hamlisch's unexpected passing:
"During his time in Pasadena, he was beloved in our community and made an enormous impact with everyone he encountered. He brought a tireless humor and enthusiasm to the stage, and was loved by our audience, musicians, and staff. Marvin propelled the Pasadena POPS into a new and successful era, guided by his contributions to the Great American Songbook carrying on the legacies of Richard Rogers and George Gershwin. His was a giant in American music and a true national treasure."

Tamasa 'Terri' Markham

Former Local 47 employee Tomasa "Terri" M. Markham, 62, born on December 20, 1949, in Harlingen, Texas, passed away June 21, 2012. She resided in Lomita, California at the time of her passing.

Funeral services will take place at Forest Lawn, Glendale on Friday, June 29, 12 p.m. at the Church of Little Flowers. For more information please contact Local 47's Overture department and we will provide you with contact information for the family.

Notice to Friends of Gerryck King

Member Gerryck King, drummer, passed away Sept. 22, 2011, and a memorial was held in the Local 47 auditorium Oct. 9, 2011. His mother, Devera King, expresses her gratitude to the staff and the Local 47 members who attended the memorial. "All of your help is truly appreciated," she writes. "God bless you and keep you."

Lorin Levee

Lorin Levee, Principal Clarinet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2012, surrounded by friends and family. Mr. Levee, born July 8, 1950, is survived by his mother Mildred, brother Phil, son David, daughter Marissa Martinez and granddaughters Maya and Gwen Levee.

The concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 23, will be dedicated to Lorin's memory and the orchestra will perform Ravel's "Le Jardin Féerique" from "Mother Goose" in his honor. His funeral will take place in Chicago; arrangements are still to be announced.

 A special concert will be presented to honor the memory of Armen Garabedian, who passed away in August 2011. Mr. Garabedian was an exceptional musician, well known to many of us in the Los Angeles musical community. He was a good friend, a beautiful soul, and an inspiration to us all. The New Valley Symphony sponsors the concert, where he served as music director and conductor. ROGER WILLIAMS
(1924 - 2011)
Life Member. Piano

Roger Williams, best known for his composition "Autumn Leaves," the only piano instrumental to reach #1 on the Billboard pop chart, died Oct. 8 2011 from pancreatic cancer. He was 87.

A Life Member of Local 47, Roger Williams is ranked by Billboard magazine as the top-selling piano recording artist in history, with 18 gold and platinum albums to his credit.
