Brian O’Connor sincerely loved to play his horn. It was his career, his passion and his life. His pure tone and floating high-range were part of his signature sound, and his majestic horn solos in “Star Trek: First Contact” are known and loved across several generations. (In fact, playing recordings of Brian’s “Star Trek” and other solos in the hospital room got him a lot of extra attention!) Brian made a peaceful transition on March 4, 2016, but his feisty spirit and his vast legacy of recorded and live work will be with us forever. Continue reading

The Ravel group was founded nine years ago by composer Ron Jones and meets every month to study great contemporary and classical scores. There’s always exciting guest panelists with lots of interactive questions, plus musical and score examples on a great projection system. Past guests include Tyler Bates, Ira Hearshen, Rick Baptist, and Gene Cipriano.

Today, Life Member Homer Archibald ‘Slim’ Tanner enjoyed the celebration of the century, literally — March 7, 2016 marks his 100th birthday!
Local 47 President John Acosta, along with Communications Director Linda Rapka, visited Slim at his home in Downey to present him with a birthday card, balloon, and a special gift: a Certificate of Recognition signed by Downey Mayor Alex Saab, Mayor Pro Tem Fernando Vasquez, and Councilmembers Sean Ashton, Roger C. Brossmer, and Luis H. Marquez, expressing their “sincerest best wishes on this very special occasion.” Continue reading
Lee Ritenour’s Six String Theory Competition Open for Applications
Grammy-winning guitarist/producer, Local 47 member Lee Ritenour hosts the biennial Six String Theory Competition for the 5th time with applications accepted in guitar, bass, piano/keyboards, and drums.
Registration is open through May 15, 2016, on the website sixstringtheory.com by submitting two YouTube videos. For guitar, applicants may register in the genres of Rock, Blues, Jazz/Fusion, Acoustic/Country, Classical/Flamenco and Rhythm Guitar which includes Pop, Funk, R&B, and World styles (Brazilian, Latin, African, Island, etc.). For rhythm players, any contemporary music style will be accepted such as jazz, fusion, R & B, rock, blues, etc. Continue reading
