The true cost of taking non-union work

Musicians experiencing a downturn of work may feel that accepting non-union work is the only answer. It’s easy to think, “I need to take whatever work I can to pay my bills and support my family. What’s the harm in working a non-union job?”

The question often not asked is, what if everyone were to accept jobs with no set wage minimums, no guaranteed health care, and no other benefits?

As musicians choose to operate on their own and take whatever jobs are offered with no regard to union scales, pretty soon these cash dates become the dominant form of employment. Accepting cash dates sends a clear message to employers that there are musicians out there willing to ignore our agreements. What could do more to cheapen our work? Continue reading →

HAPPY LABOR DAY!

I am a proud union worker.

That means I am part of an organization that fights not only for my own benefit, but for everyone’s.

Unions are one of the only forces capable of effectively resisting the continual downward push on employee compensation. Consumer spending is what creates jobs and prosperity. Increased employee compensation leads to more consumer spending; it pumps more fuel into the engine that drives the whole economy.

That is what unions are fighting for.

That is what I am supporting by working in a union.

Popular radio personality partners with Local 47 to promote AFM musicians

Now entering its tenth year of broadcasting, “Martini in the Morning” has been bringing audiences the coolest, swingin’est, most romantic songs on the radio, “The Great American Songbook,” all day and every day to an ever-growing worldwide audience.

At the helm of “Martini in the Morning” (“MITM”) is Local 47 member Brad “Martini” Chambers, who hosts the weekday morning drive-time show, as well as being the station’s founder and chief creative officer. Democrats Say ‘Bring More Music Jobs to CA!’

California Democratic Party passes resolution to broaden state’s film & TV tax incentives to support music employment

In support of local musicians seeking to grow music scoring work in the state, the California Democratic Party’s Executive Board adopted a resolution Aug. 16, 2015 in favor of broadening the Film & TV Tax Incentive Program to support and increase music jobs.

The resolution was put forward by Local 47 member and activist Clifford Tasner, who serves as a delegate to the California Democratic Convention, and 25 DSCC members. It speaks to the merits of AB 1199, a bill aimed at improving the California Film & TV Tax Credit Program to bring more music scoring work to the state. Continue reading →
