Orchestration Classes 2024 with Dr. Norman Ludwin

AFM Local 47 members are invited to participate in an online learning experience with Executive Board member and professional orchestrator Dr. Norman Ludwin. This series of 4 classes will examine every section — Strings, Winds, & Brass — culminating in Full Orchestra. Students will also have the opportunity to complete their own optional orchestration assignments.

AFM Local 47 membership will be verified prior to enrollment.

Orchestration II with Dr. Norman Ludwin

Dr. Ludwin provides access to online resources with an interactive website that includes essential class materials, scores and listening samples. Even if you have limited or no experience in orchestration, Ludwin strongly encourages you to attend to learn this important craft that can boost your career.

Students will continue the study of orchestration and elements of texture and form by looking at contemporary concert music, analysis of different composers’ methods of orchestration, and extensive study of film music. Using classic scores and scores he himself has recently worked on, Ludwin will instruct on cues and selections from Michael Giacchino, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and Thomas Newman, among others. The ending course project is a recording of the students’ original compositions by the Symphony 47 orchestra.

You must be an AFM Local 47 member in good standing to attend this free course.

Orchestration I: July 18-Sept 5, 2015

Participants are introduced to orchestral instruments and their usage. Two areas are covered: instrumentation, which deals with the construction, sound production, range, notation, and playing techniques of each instrument; and orchestration, which is the actual process of scoring music for orchestra. Groups of instruments examined include brass, strings, woodwinds, keyboards, harp, and percussion. Class sessions involve score study, instrumental demonstrations, and performance and discussion of student assignments. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of music fundamentals; e.g. notes, keys, scales, meter, etc. RSVP: 323.993.3179, jeff.surga@promusic47.org

Orchestration II: Sept 12-Oct 31, 2015

Students will learn composition and elements of form by looking at contemporary styles of music, score study, analysis of different composers’ methods of orchestration, score reduction (e.g. learning how to reduce an orchestral score to a piano part, or reducing to a five-line staff), and possible guest lecturers. The ending course project is a recording of students’ original compositions by the Symphony 47 orchestra.

Orchestration I

Saturdays: June 21 – Aug. 23*
(*no classes July 12 or 19)
10 am – 1 pm @ Local 47
Class sessions involve score study, instrumental demonstrations, and performance and discussion of student assignments. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of music fundamentals; e.g. notes, keys, scales, meter, etc. The course will culminate with a recording by professionals of an orchestration for seven players written by the students (fee for the musicians will be collected by the instructor).

Orchestration II

Saturdays: Sept. 13 – Oct. 25
10 am – 1 pm @ Local 47
Students will analyze selected excerpts from orchestral film scores by Michael Giacchino, Thomas Newman, Chris Young and more, and compose sketches for various ensembles and orchestral configurations. The course will culminate with a recording by professionals of an original chamber work for seven players (string quintet, oboe and horn) written by the students.
