Air Travel Now Officially Sweeter for Musicians

Transportation Authority releases final ruling on musical instruments onboard U.S. air carriers
On Dec. 30, 2014, the U.S. Department of Transportation released the long-awaited final administrative rule which fully implements section 403 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2012, the law authorizing musical instruments as carry-on baggage on board U.S. air carriers.
This historic accomplishment was led by the American Federation of musicians and made possible through efforts by members of Congress who are longtime AFM allies, and officers and rank-and-file members of Local 161-710 in Washington, D.C.
The final ruling pertaining to musical instruments can be read at www.dot.gov.

AFM Local 47 members vote in John Acosta as President, Rick Baptist as VP
LOS ANGELES, CA (Dec. 16, 2014) — Members of the American Federation of Musicians Local 47 have elected new leadership, with current vice president John Acosta rising rank as the union’s new president.
Replacing Acosta as vice president and joining the Local 47 executive board for the first time is veteran studio musician Rick Baptist. Gary Lasley will serve a third term as secretary/treasurer. Acosta succeeds Vince Trombetta, who has been president of the Los Angeles musicians union since 2009. All three titled officers ran unopposed in the Local 47 general election held on Dec. 9. “1M1: Hollywood Horns of the Golden Years” is a documentary film from director/producer Annie Bosler about the history of the Los Angeles film studio French horn players from the 1920s through the 1960s. Featuring numerous interviews with L.A. music legends and narrated by Jon Burlingame, the film follows the development of the motion picture industry and its battles with the musicians’ union. The groundbreaking film uncovers many of the brilliant, never before acknowledged horn soloists of the big screen.
