Don Randi Delights at Concert & Book Signing

On the evening of Nov. 19, living legend Don Randi hosted a free concert and book signing in the Local 47 Serena Kay & Earl Williams Auditorium.

His new book “You’re Heard These Hands,” co-authored by Karen “Nish” Nishimura, tells of his journey through the musical landscape of Southern California, from the “Wall of Sound” to the Wrecking Crew of studio musicians during the explosive pop music era of the 1960s and early 1970s, and other incredible stories. BURBANK, CA (DEC. 15, 2015) — More than 50 members of the American Federation of Musicians Local 47, Unite Here Local 11, and other unions and community supporters held a large demonstration Tuesday morning against the exploitation of musicians taking place on the Warner Bros. lot.

The group distributed leaflets objecting to the studio’s facilitation of non-union activity on its property. Warner Bros., signatory to the American Federation of Musicians, permitted a non-union “dark” date by Cinema Scoring, an employer with whom AFM Local 47 has a labor dispute. Continue reading

Affordable Health Care Act: Important reminder from AFM Secretary/Treasurer Sam Folio

AFM - American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada
December 3, 2015

Dear Member:

I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling rushed when I’m shopping for something important.

This is especially true for health care for me and my family, and an important deadline is coming up. December 15th  is the last day to enroll, renew or change your Marketplace insurance plan and have coverage begin on January 1, 2016.

That’s why we’re reaching out. Working America Health Care is here to help connect you to the right insurance plan on the Marketplace for 2016.

Don’t wait until December 15th. Hold times can be especially long around deadlines. Call 888-276-2580 or visit our website to connect today.

Many Working America members like you already have found affordable coverage this year. If you sign up through us, our recommended licensed professionals will be there to help do the same for you. They will answer questions and compare options together with you—at no extra cost.

After you sign up for a plan, we’ve still got your back. Our exclusive Health Advocate service* will be there in 2016, providing assistance with issues like doctor searches or negotiating medical claims.

The New Year can be a crazy time, but choosing your health plan should be hassle-free. Visit WorkingAmericaHealthCare.org before Dec. 15 to begin the no-stress search.

Fraternally,

Sam Folio

The Year at a Glance

John Acosta

President’s Report – December 2015

As 2015 comes to a close I thought it would be appropriate to review the first year of my administration, a little self-analysis if you will. We began the year embarking on a controversial, yet in my opinion overdue, review of our recording agreements. At the January Inaugural meeting the members voted to create a Task Force to review our Film & TV contracts, and to deliberate on whether or not a “buyout” agreement made sense for musicians in our Union. This question has consumed the AFM for many years and has been bandied about in membership meetings, on session breaks, on social media and on the blogs, but never has any administration been brave enough or dumb enough (or both) to formally pose this to the rank and file. After many months of research and discussion, the Task Force made its recommendations to the membership, but most importantly to our International. These recommendations can be found on our website in the members’ area. Continue reading

Dick Gabriel (1940-2015)

Dick Gabriel

Dick Gabriel gave decades of service to musicians, working originally at Local 47, and then for many decades for the American Federation of Musicians.

His gifts included an encyclopedic knowledge of AFM contracts, electronic media history and people.

Perhaps his greatest strength was his lifelong commitment to keeping his door open to working musicians.
