David Weiss was a beloved mentor, friend, and advisor whose passion for music and life touched our entire community. The Weiss and Walker families, along with Young Musicians Foundation, will present a tribute concert in celebration of David’s life on Tuesday, June 24, at the Aratani/Japan America Theater at 7pm. Concert and reception are free; RSVP requested at davidtribute.eventbrite.com.

YMF is deeply grateful to David’s family and friends for their guidance in selecting a few of his favorite pieces for the evening’s program, including works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Bach, and Dvorak.  We are also honored to present a new work by composer Michael Levine dedicated to David. A multimedia production will accompany the music. Ivan Shulman and Roger Kalia, YMF Debut Orchestra Music Director & Conductor, will conduct. Following the performances, attendees are invited to a reception outside in the plaza at approximately 8:15pm.

 Writer/director J J Hickey goes all union on his web comedy series

Writer, director and producer J J Hickey first met composer Dan Redfeld 14 years ago when he was seeking a music director for a theatrical production of the John Dos Passos trilogy “U.S.A.”

His web comedy series “Funny Boned” marks their third project together, and Hickey says he can’t imagine not using union workers – including musicians – for all his future projects.

At the General Membership Meeting of April 28, 2014, several motions were adopted requesting the Local to provide various data to the membership.

Local 47′s responses to Motions 3, 4 and 5 have been posted in the members-only section of our website. On June 9, Local 47 issued an update to the Work Activity Report in response to Motion 5. Local 47 will hold a Special Membership Meeting Thursday, June 12 in the Serena Kay & Earl Williams Auditorium at 7:30 pm to discuss Electronic Media issues.

For those interested in making a presentation at this meeting, please contact the Secretary’s Office (323.993.3159) by end of business (5 pm) Tuesday, June 10 in order to have it considered for the agenda.

At the meeting there will be a guest panel present in order to answer any questions you may have about Electronic Media. Please bring whatever questions you have to the meeting and we will do our best to get them answered.

Max Herman played his first professional music job at the age of 13. He has since enjoyed a stellar music career as the first trumpeter for many of the top name bands of the Swing Era. Most notably, Max was the first trumpet in the Bob Crosby Orchestra. His second career was that of music publisher, forming Fiesta Music and Herman Music. His third career was that of President of the Los Angeles Musicians Union, for which he is credited for many advances of that organization. View a video interview with Max Herman at namm.org.

Momentum continues to grow for the American Federation of Musicians’ member-driven Listen Up! campaign aimed at stemming the offshoring of film scoring and bring more music jobs back to the United States.

“Listen up, Lionsgate!” — The Listen Up! campaign hand-delivered more than 12,000 petition signatures to Lionsgate Entertainment’s Santa Monica headquarters May 13 calling on the company to uphold industry standards for musicians and end its practice of offshoring film scoring work. Musicians made a special delivery at Lionsgate’s Santa Monica headquarters May 13 of a petition signed by over 12,000 supporters of their Listen Up! campaign. Around 40 musicians gathered at Stewart Street Park about a mile from Lionsgate for a pre-delivery rally. Speakers included Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Executive Secretary-Treasurer Maria Elena Durazo, Santa Monica City Councilman Kevin McKeown, Pastor Bridie Roberts of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, and rank-and-file AFM musician Neil Samples. Orchestration I & II classes taught by Dr. Norman Ludwin

AFM Local 47 presents two eight-week courses:

Orchestration I

Saturdays: June 21 – Aug. 23*
(*no classes July 12 or 19)
10 am – 1 pm @ Local 47
Class sessions involve score study, instrumental demonstrations, and performance and discussion of student assignments. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of music fundamentals; e.g. notes, keys, scales, meter, etc. The course will culminate with a recording by professionals of an orchestration for seven players written by the students (fee for the musicians will be collected by the instructor).

Orchestration II

Saturdays: Sept. 13 – Oct. 25
10 am – 1 pm @ Local 47
Students will analyze selected excerpts from orchestral film scores by Michael Giacchino, Thomas Newman, Chris Young and more, and compose sketches for various ensembles and orchestral configurations. The course will culminate with a recording by professionals of an original chamber work for seven players (string quintet, oboe and horn) written by the students.
